  • Past Simple —
  • Past Continuous —

I was walking home (past continuous — фон) when I saw an old friend (past simple — событие). We stopped, talked for an hour, and went to a cafe (past simple — последовательность).

  1. Setup —
  2. Build —
  3. Event —

Last Saturday, I was at the beach with my friends. The weather was
beautiful — sunny but not too hot. We were swimming and laughing
when suddenly, my friend Mike yelled, "Look! A dolphin!" We all turned
to look. There were three dolphins jumping out of the water about 20
meters from us. We watched them for about ten minutes until they
swam away. It was one of the best moments of my summer.

  • was at the beach (past simple of be) — setup.
  • was sunny / were swimming (past continuous) — фон.
  • yelled / turned / watched (past simple) — события.
  • until they swam away — концовка последовательности.

  • Then / next / after that — следующий шаг.
  • Later / later on — позже.

  • One day / one morning / one Saturday.

Фон

  • At the time / back then — далёкий прошлый контекст.
  • Meanwhile / in the meantime —
  • All day / all morning / all night —

  • Suddenly / all of a sudden —
  • Out of nowhere —
  • Without warning —

Last summer, I visited my grandmother's old house in the countryside.
The wooden door creaked as we opened it. Inside, the air smelled of

lighting up the hallway. There was a big stone fireplace in the

quiet and peaceful, like time had stopped.

My grandmother is a small, slim woman in her 80s. She has short white

wears a flowered apron, even when she's not cooking. She's incredibly

can't change her mind. I love her dearly.

a big oak tree decorated with flowers. As the bride walked down the
aisle, everyone stood up and watched her. After the ceremony, we had
dinner in a barn — long tables with candles, and a band playing folk

It was one of the most beautiful days I've ever experienced.

Last summer, I went to Iceland with two of my best friends. It was my
first time outside of Russia. I'll never forget our second day, when
we drove to see the Northern Lights.

We were driving through a snowy mountain road when our car broke down.
The engine just stopped. It was already getting dark, and the
temperature was below freezing. We tried calling for help, but there
was no phone signal. We were really worried.

After about an hour, a big truck pulled over. The driver was a friendly
Icelandic man named Bjorn. He spoke perfect English and helped us
restart the car. He even invited us to his house for dinner.

That night, instead of seeing the Northern Lights, we sat in Bjorn's
warm kitchen, ate fresh fish, and listened to his stories about
Iceland. The next day, his neighbor towed our car to the nearest town.

I never saw the Northern Lights, but I made a friend I still talk to
today. Sometimes the things that go wrong on a trip become the best
memories.

Почему 'I was eating breakfast when phone rang' неправильно?
Answer
Вторая: структура должна быть *I **was eating** breakfast when the phone **rang**.* Past Continuous (*was eating*) для длящегося действия; Past Simple (*rang*) для прерывающего события.

  2. Дословный перевод было как was — работает, но the weather was cold чётче, чем it was cold.
  3. remember the past* — remember берёт инфинитив (to remember to do) или герундий (to remember doing) — разные значения (урок 20 в M01).
  4. At the end / in the end: at the end of the movie (конкретная точка); in the end (= наконец/в итоге).

  • Time markers: first/then/finally; suddenly; meanwhile.
  • Описания: сенсорные детали (see/hear/smell/feel/mood).
  • Linkers: and / but / because / so / for example / in the end.
